For all classes: casual talk on motivation/goals, interest and expectations from the class. Then, if the student's experience allows it, discussion on what material/teaching approach is favoured. Then, I use a very short drill as a basic level check when appropriate, otherwise, I directly proceed through the different materials which I bring in the class to answer most needs and expectation either this is in general/academic/conversational English or Business/Technical English, or in General/conversational French. Since French is very seldom studied at school in Japan, I also designed a personal starter kit material to ease access to a first textbook. Anyway, in either language, I clearly communicate on the agreed objectives following the first class, so to ensure customer satisfaction as the students become quickly aware of their personal improvement in the studied language, thus keeping a high motivation. |

About English, believe in yourself and don't listen anymore to the many pretending that only those who were born in an English spoken country can master their language. And don't even compare yourself to anyone who has 5, 10, 15 or 20 years of English speaking experience if you're just starting or starting again. However, after 5, 10, 15 or 20 years of an efficient and regular learning practice, I am positive you can compare yourself with any so-called native speaker who's respectively 5, 10, 15 or 20 years old. Also, as you do so, you will very likely be doing much better than them, while fully getting rid of that "native/non-native speaker" complex!
About French, this is quite a similar message, however, French is just a little more complex than English, and I believe the first steps are essential in consolidating the foundations on how the language is processed in the speaker's mind (working/functional knowledge of grammar & vocabulary).

プロフィール•経歴
I am a veteran teacher in both English and French (over 15 years) and trilingual with Japanese, as well as an experienced, mature person, who's still only 48 and full of energy and interest in others. Some say that I have a gift for languages, but I just believe that I was able to keep a high motivation thanks to having successfully applied efficient learning strategies. So, I enjoy very much sharing them with my students while observing them becoming independent thinkers in the target language. Of course, I am qualified to teach both languages as I hold a BA in English studies (language, literature, culture, also including linguistics and didactics) which is a full TEFL/TESOL certificate by itself, to which is affixed an optional "FLE" certificate for privilege extension into didactic French.
Otherwise, I have a passion for aeronautics, cultures and travels, paired with a recent two-year+ business experience within Airbus Group, as an aircraft technology teacher/ground instructor having taught my courses on all aircraft systems (for 2 makes) in English, to three major air-forces, before eventually having received extra nomination to the English Representative responsibilities for all sites owned by Cassidian Aviation Training Services (Airbus Group, Cognac head-office, France).
Otherwise, I have a passion for aeronautics, cultures and travels, paired with a recent two-year+ business experience within Airbus Group, as an aircraft technology teacher/ground instructor having taught my courses on all aircraft systems (for 2 makes) in English, to three major air-forces, before eventually having received extra nomination to the English Representative responsibilities for all sites owned by Cassidian Aviation Training Services (Airbus Group, Cognac head-office, France).

Each language has its own problematics. For English, having the student speak 80 to 90% of the class time is essential in my opinion, and this is why and how I mostly recommend that we use the famous "Side by Side" textbook in any class until reaching an intermediate level. Then, I present "English vocabulary in Use" or the like series as the essential toolbox, while a material like "Idioms from Square One" would be the wrapping paper (or coloured English) that makes you sound like a native.
I also use some listening practice with fill in the blanks drills as well as dialogues and role-playing activities.
In business English too, this is essential and I even use some video presentations similarly (without, then with their subtitles).
